Bergen County to Fund One of the Largest Senior Housing Complexes in a Decade
$750,000.00 in HOME Program funds awarded for the construction of a senior complex in Little Ferry
Hackensack, NJ -- The Bergen County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution on Wednesday, February 2 which approved the disbursement of $750,000 in HOME Program funds.
In addition to the Bergen County Division of Community Development, other funding sources for the project include the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, and N.J. State tax credits that incentivize the development of needed senior low income housing. This development will be one of the largest senior housing complexes constructed in Bergen County in a decade. The complex will be contained in a single three story building with an attached parking lot, lobby, community room, an on-site superintendent, walkable paths, gardens, and outdoor seating areas.
“One of the largest senior housing complexes constructed in over a decade is coming to Bergen County,” said Bergen County Commissioner Germaine Ortiz. “We know there is a need for senior housing by the sheer amount of calls and inquiries we receive on a daily basis. Bergen County is proud to make sure senior citizens receive affordable and accessible housing where they can age in place, near their loved ones.”
This project will consist of 85 units including 22 units for senior who require supportive services. The units will be divided as 64 one bedroom units and 21 two bedroom units, with one of the two bedroom units being occupied by the on-site superintendent. Of the supportive service units, 14 will be reserved for those with developmental disabilities and eight will be reserved for consumers of mental health services. All supportive services will be provided by Vantage Health Systems.
“Thanks to the assistance of our community partners and the Home Investment Partnership Grant (HOME) program, we are happy to announce the financing and construction of the largest senior housing complex in Bergen County in more than a decade,” said Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco. “Little Ferry has one of the fastest growing senior populations in the County and we are ecstatic to be working with the Mayor and Council there as well to help provide our seniors with the quality, affordable housing.”
The building is projected to be completed by Spring 2023, and full occupancy is projected by Fall 2023. Interested residents should continue to follow the news to see when applications open.
“I am thrilled to welcome the construction of 85 units of senior housing to the Borough of Little Ferry,” said Mayor Mauro Raguseo. “The senior population is the fastest growing age group in our community, and being able to offer them quality, affordable housing right here is a blessing. Many of our seniors are on a fixed income and need to downsize. This will give many of our long time resident Seniors the ability to remain in our community during their golden years. We have had this goal for years, and I excited that our vision will soon become a reality.”
