Rochelle Park, N.J. (June 16, 2022) – Center for Hope and Safety (CHS), Bergen County’s only not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping adults and children rebuild their lives beyond domestic violence and abuse, recently hosted its annual Golf Classic at Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, New Jersey and raised nearly $40,000 for critical support services for domestic violence survivors and their children in Bergen County.
“Our annual Golf Classic serves as a key fundraiser to help us continue our mission of helping domestic violence victims and their children rebuild their lives beyond domestic abuse,” said Julye Myner, PhD, Executive Director, Center for Hope and Safety. “We are so grateful for the community’s continued support. Funds raised from our annual Golf Classic enable us to provide vital support services to those in crisis including our 24/7 hotline, risk assessment and safe housing as well as programs for survivors including economic empowerment workshops, career counseling, legal services, and therapy programs for adults and children. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all everyone who participated in the golf outing and who helped make it a success so we can continue our life-saving and changing work.”
CHS has never, in its 46-year history, served more people than the organization is helping today. CHS began to experience a sharp uptick in requests for help in 2020, when calls to its emergency hotline increased nearly 50 percent from the year before. This past year has proven even more difficult for those CHS serves. In 2021, CHS’s Safe House Program sheltered 222 victims, an unprecedented number, and 25% more than the prior 10-year average of 176. The Safe House Program daily census also more than doubled as pandemic challenges led to an increase in length of stay. CHS’s free, 24/7 hotline answered 7,508 calls, a 23% increase over 2020, and 50% more than the prior 10-year average of 4,990.
