National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section Kicks Off Centennial Celebration

Former State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg Named Honorary Chair

Bergenfield, NJ (October 12, 2022)- 100 years ago a small group of intrepid Jewish women in Hackensack got together with the goal of making life better for people in their community, forming what is now the National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section (NCJW BCS). Throughout 2022 and 2023, the organization will be commemorating its 100th anniversary, celebrating a century of philanthropy, fundraising, advocacy, and sisterhood in Bergen County and beyond.

Retired New Jersey Senate Majority Leader and NCJW Life Member, Loretta Weinberg, has been named Honorary Chair of the NCJW BCS’s centennial celebration. Through a lifetime of service, Senator Weinberg epitomizes the involved advocate and is a committed long-time member of the Bergen County Section.

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

“As a life member of NCJW, I am pleased be the honorary chair of this 100th observance,” said Senator Weinberg. “As a member of the New Jersey Senate, it was my NCJW sisters who were always available to give testimony on bills to protect a woman’s right to access healthcare. They have been a force for good in our state.”

NCJW BCS will mark the start of the centennial celebration in style with a 1950s-themed membership event on Tuesday, October 25 at 6 p.m. at the Brownstone Pancake Factory at 717 East Palisade Avenue, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Donning poodle skirts and saddle shoes, members will enjoy a night filled with entertainment, dancing, games, food and comradery.

“For a century, the members of the National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section have been dedicated to making life better for people in our community,” said National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section Co-President Ina Miller-Silverstein, who joined the organization in 1960. “Our centennial celebration gives us the opportunity to look back at 100 years of achievements and memories and celebrate the impact we’ve had locally and beyond. I would like to thank all of our members and volunteers for making this milestone possible and for all that they do to enact positive change.”

Throughout their centennial year, NCJW BCS will offer educational and stimulating programs, including six general meetings and a myriad of speakers, book groups, trips and advocacy activities centered around women’s reproductive freedom, voting rights, gun violence prevention, domestic violence prevention, and more. Additionally, the organization will commemorate its impact on the Bergen County community, New Jersey and beyond through a number of celebrations and fundraising events including:
