Commercial Burglary – Jewelry store in Paramus

On Thursday, March 23, 2023, at 3:48am, Paramus Police received an activation of a burglar alarm at the Jewelry Exchange, 275 State Highway #4 W/B, Paramus, NJ.

Upon officers arrival they observed a broken glass window leading into the building. Officers conducted a building check and secured the business until the landlord and detectives arrived.

The landlord arrived on the scene and reviewed the surveillance video. Officers observed 2 unknown subjects wearing dark colored clothing, masks and gloves enter through the broken window and target glass showcases for multi-businesses. Unknown subjects removed an undetermined amount of jewelry filling a white plastic bag. Suspects then fled through the same smashed window prior to police arrival.  These are the most common jewelry store type burglaries referred to as “The three-minute burglary”.

This burglary took 66 seconds from when the suspects entered the store until they fled. In a typical year, 70% of the burglaries recorded by the JSA – Jewelry Security Alliance are three-minute burglaries, with millions of dollars in merchandise stolen.

It is always recommended not to leave merchandise out and visible overnight, regardless of value.

This month an uptick in jewelry type crimes have been occurring in Paramus. On March 4, 2023 a traveling Jewelry salesperson leaving the Jewelry Exchange was targeted and became the victim of a diversion theft of $120,000.  Jewelers should stay vigilant and always be aware of their surroundings.
