West Side Presbyterian Church Presents Mendelssohn’s Elijah
RIDGEWOOD— Fire. Flood. Sacrifice. Storm. A miraculous ascent into heaven. These are just some of the elements that make up Felix Mendelssohn’s captivating oratorio, Elijah. Considered the crowning glory of his career, the piece dramatizes the Old Testament account of droughts and floods brought on by a Hebrew prophet who seeks to show his nation that there is only one God.
On June 4 at 3:00 pm, Elijah will come to life in the sanctuary of West Side Presbyterian Church, with Baritone Robert Prowse singing the title role. Prowse is an accomplished singer, conductor and teacher of music. As baritone soloist, he has performed opera, oratorio and recital. Prowse conducts the choirs at New Jersey City University, where he is coordinator of choral studies and classical voice in the Music, Dance and Theatre Department.
Prowse and West Side’s Oratorio Choir and Orchestra will be accompanied by members of Clarum Sonum and the New Jersey Wind Symphony, with soloists Lisa Bremer and Aimee Spiegel, sopranos; Apryl Helder, mezzo-soprano; Mathew Tartza, tenor; and David Langan, bass-baritone.
Classical music fans will appreciate the nods to Handel, Bach, Beethoven and Mozart in this timeless, towering masterpiece.
Admission to the concert is free, with donations always appreciated. For those unable to attend in person, the concert will be livestreamed at https://westside.org/watch/concert-livestream/.
