Native New Jerseyan, Allendale Rehab & Healthcare Resident Celebrates 102nd Birthday

ALLENDALE, N.J. (June 12, 2025) – For Anna Winifred VanGelder, a native New Jerseyan who recently turned 102, the time is always right to try activities and learn something new. Known for her enthusiasm and joyful nature, the centenarian, who now resides at Allendale Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, can often be found joining in creative crafts programs.
"You can't miss our special Anna – her beautiful smile and bright laughter light up a room," said Allendale's Diane Bayles, director of life enrichment. The Bergen County skilled nursing center hosted the milestone celebration for the centenarian.
VanGelder was born on April 24, 1923, in Jersey City. She graduated from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School and had a long career in accounting. Her passion for traveling led to countless trips and adventures; she married later in life.
In December 2022, VanGelder moved to Allendale Rehab & Healthcare Center and has been enjoying independent and group activities ever since. Programs with a creative bent are among her favorites, and she also loves to play bingo with fellow residents.
When asked what accomplishment she is most proud of, VanGelder will joke, “staying alive!” Laughter really is the best medicine, she added.
