OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE BERGEN COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
The Bergen County Board of Commissioners is deeply saddened by the passing of Surrogate Michael Dressler, a remarkable public servant whose influence will be felt in this county for generations.
Surrogate Dressler’s life reflected resilience and purpose. Many knew the story of the accident he suffered as a young man, but those who worked with him understood that he never allowed that moment to define him. He earned his law degree from Seton Hall and went on to serve in local office before being elected Surrogate in 1996. In that role, he guided families through some of their most difficult moments and helped build programs that strengthened protections for vulnerable residents. His work establishing the Guardianship Monitoring Program and expanding access through community-based satellite offices stands as a model for the state.
Michael was also known for his personality and presence. At community events and rallies, he was always at the center of the crowd, reaching out to people with a familiar greeting that made everyone feel seen. He remained dedicated to public life until the very end, recently hosting a fundraiser as he prepared for another campaign.
The Board of Commissioners extends sincere condolences to his wife, Aggie, and to the entire Dressler family. Michael Dressler’s leadership, determination, and service to Bergen County will not be forgotten. We will miss him.
