Bergen Lets Down its “Hair” with Classic Musical

PARAMUS, N.J. – The Bergen Institute for the Creative Arts and Bergenstages will present a production of Gerome Ragni and James Rado’s “Hair,” with music by Galt MacDermot, this April in the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre at Bergen Community College’s main campus in Paramus (400 Paramus Road).

Directed by Bergen theatre professor Leigh Jonaitis, Ed.D., with assistance from Allano Floro, and with music directed by music professor Jess Abrams, “Hair” won Grammy and Tony awards for its celebration of 1960s counterculture. Set in 1967 during the Vietnam War, the story follows a group of hippies fighting the establishment, dodging the draft and living in New York City. Exploring ideas of identity, community, global responsibility, and peace, “Hair” remains as relevant as ever as it examines what it means to be a young person in a changing world.

Performances will take place on Friday, April 3; Saturday, April 4; Thursday, April 9; Friday, April 10; and Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances take place on Saturday, April 3 and Saturday, April 11 at 2 p.m. Audiences are invited to attend a special post-show audience talk-back immediately following the April 9 performance. Tickets are $18 for general admission, $12 for seniors (age 65+) and $5 for all students. For seats, visit tickets.bergen.edu or call (201) 447-7428.
