Senator Andy Kim Joins Family Promise to Serve Meals to Bergen County Residents in Need

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — On Friday, June 5, Senator Andy Kim joined Family Promise of Bergen County in serving free, nutritious meals to members of the community facing food insecurity at the organization’s nightly meal distribution program in Hackensack.

For more than three decades, the Family Promise Walk-in Dinner—which takes place at the Housing, Health, and Human Services Center—has been a staple in Bergen County, serving more than 1.5 million meals to residents since its inception in 1991. Joined by Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco and Commissioners Tom Sullivan and Rafael Marte, Senator Kim spoke with Family Promise volunteers, board members, and staff on the importance of programs such as the Walk-in Dinner, which make fresh, free meals accessible to those in need and ensures that anyone who comes to their door does not leave hungry.

“A no-questions-asked program, the Family Promise Walk-in Dinner has never missed a day of providing free, nutritious, hot meals for over 35 years,” said Paul Shackford, President of Family Promise of Bergen County’s Board of Trustees. “With 150-200 dinners served each day, Senator Kim was able to join us to prepare and serve meals to those in the community who rely on us. We are grateful he was able to hear the stories of those we serve as we work to feed nearly 55,000 meals this year alone.”

The Walk-in Dinner Program was part of a series of visits Senator Kim made to Bergen County organizations that address critical issues facing the county’s most vulnerable populations. “It was inspiring to witness the passion of those across Bergen County who have dedicated their lives to ensuring not only Bergen residents but anyone in need across the state have access to lifesaving programs and reliable food,” said Senator Kim.
