Valley Now Offering Focused Shockwave Therapy For Pain Relief and Healing
PARAMUS, NJ, September 30, 2026 – Valley Medical Group’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team is proud to offer focused shockwave therapy as part of its roster of outpatient sports medicine services. This non-invasive treatment option provides pain relief from musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions, reduces inflammation, and stimulates the body’s natural healing response.
Focused shockwave therapy directs acoustic pressure waves, also known as sounds waves, to specific, targeted tissues – including tendons, bones, and joints – to reduce pain and support tissue repair and regeneration. This treatment leads to improved mobility and function in both athletes and non-athletic patients ages 16 and older who are experiencing chronic pain. It often replaces the need for pain medication.
“At Valley, our focused shockwave therapy is delivered by our team of board-certified physiatrists. We customize each patient’s treatment plan based on their condition, tissue sensitivity, personal treatment goals, and stage of healing,” said Jack Annunziato, DO, Medical Director of Ambulatory Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services for Valley Medical Group. “We can make real-time adjustments throughout each session based on the patient’s symptoms, comfort level, and response to treatment.”
Using a handheld device to deliver pressure waves to tissues deep beneath the skin, Dr. Annunziato and his physiatrist colleagues, Samuel Jacob, DO, and Zhi Cheng Chen, MD, incorporate body movement and functional assessments during treatment.
“We guide the joints and tissues through their full range of motion to make certain all affected areas are addressed,” said Dr. Jacob. “We may use ultrasound guidance to pinpoint injured tissues or regions of calcification. As treatment progresses, we can easily make adjustments to the waves’ energy level, if needed.”
Treatment time is individualized but often takes about 20 minutes per session over a number of sessions. Patients usually begin to feel relief within two weeks.
Focused shockwave therapy can be used to treat:
Acute or chronic tendinopathies, including rotator cuff syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendonitis, or calcific tendinopathies
Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
Soft tissue injuries
Sports injuries
Muscle tightness and trigger points
Myofascial pain syndrome
Stress fractures or fracture malunion
“Our team’s collaborative treatment approach benefits patients by providing them with a comprehensive treatment strategy that may incorporate other options, such as physical therapy and platelet-rich plasma injections,” said Dr. Chen.
“Perhaps the most important benefit we hear from our patients is that their quality of life has improved, when they may have lived with chronic pain for months and often years,” said Dr. Annunziato. “They can get back to sports, family activities, and work with reduced pain and improved function.”
