(Hackensack, NJ; November 22, 2021) ─ The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation's (NNJCF) celebration of National Community Foundation Week from November 12 through November 18 highlighted the escalation of food insecurity in the region.
The NNJCF collaborated again with community leader Randy Glover and donated frozen turkeys to All Access Community Development Corporation (All Access CDC), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Hackensack, to help young adults with families in Bergen County. All Access CDC distributed the frozen turkeys at the Majestic Lodge and Temple (Elks) through its 'Grab & Go Meals' program.
Food Insecurity Increased
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity remains a serious concern. Last year, a Bergen County Food Security Task Force survey found over 80 emergency providers saw a 50 percent increase among consumers in need of food, with some experiencing more than a 200 percent increase. They also found over 20,000 people rely on donated food weekly in Bergen County.
"During National Community Foundation Week, the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation highlighted the serious issue of food insecurity in the area. The Foundation collaborated with All Access Community Development Corporation, a community based organization working on the front lines, to ensure food is provided to people who need it," said Mary Blanusa, Executive Director, Northern New Jersey Community Foundation. "During the holiday season and throughout the year, we ask the public to join us and help others facing food insecurity locally."
The donation of turkeys came at a particularly difficult time for people struggling with food security. "Our allotment of food distribution has increased from 800 meals to well over 1,600 daily. The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation's donation of frozen turkeys will help our young adults with families," said Randy Glover, Chairman/Executive Director, All Access Community Development Corporation.
The NNJCF urges the public to help food pantries replenish dwindling supplies. Monetary donations may be made to over 76 food pantries throughout Bergen County.
