New Jersey Sisters Share Their Experiences Growing Up Black and Jewish

This Timely Topics Presentation is Hosted by NCJW BCS

TEANECK, NJ (November 29) - The National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section (NCJW BCS), a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action,

will host a discussion on the intersection of Jewish and Black identity with Bergen County Section member Lois Katz Brown and her two daughters, who will offer their perspectives on growing up Black and Jewish. The event titled Timely Topics: Growing Up Black and Jewish is open to the public. It will take place on Thursday, December 15, 2022, starting at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Emeth, located at 1666 Windsor Rd, Teaneck, NJ. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased at the door, but attendees are asked to RSVP by emailing office@ncjwbcs.org.

In this intimate family discussion, Lois Katz Brown and her daughters Paula Donaldson, an attorney, and Sound (formerly Julie) Brown, a musician, will examine how living in a multiracial and multicultural family shaped them into who they are today. Lois will recount her family upbringing and how she met her husband. Paula and Sound will discuss how their experiences growing up with one White Jewish parent and one Black gentile parent, their relationships with their extended families, and the influences of the communities in which they lived, shaped their individual personal identities.

“We are excited to hear one of our own section members and her daughters address the rich experiences and challenges they faced growing up Jewish and Black” says Ginny Wasserman, NCJW’s Vice President of Education. “With the racism and antisemitism many people are facing in our community, today more than ever, it is important to take time to learn about the different experiences and perspectives of our neighbors.”
