Valley Health System Offering Biologic Injections to Treat Asthma and COPD

PARAMUS, NJ, March 10, 2025 – Valley Health System is proud to offer biologic injections as a treatment option for both severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Biologics are monoclonal antibodies that target immune pathways responsible for inflammation in asthma. In the era of precision medicine, biologics allow for a targeted approach to asthma where a specific biologic medication is chosen based on the patient’s unique inflammatory profile.

“Biologic injections are important for patients who are experiencing shortness of breath or other asthma symptoms despite being on an optimal regimen of inhalers and oral medications,” said Wanda Choy, MD, Director of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine for Valley Medical Group. “The biologics have been able to help patients reduce the need for oral steroids and also help to improve quality of life and breathing function.”

Biologic injections become a part of routine treatment, along with usual inhalers and oral medications for asthma. Injections can be administered at the office or self-administered at home, with the frequency depending on the medication. For asthma, Valley offers the following injections:

Nucala (mepolizumab) – administered once a month

Fasenra (benralizumab) – administered once every 2 months

Dupixent (dupilumab) – administered once every 2 weeks

Tezspire (tezepelumab) – administered once a month

Xolair (omalizaumab) – administered once a month

Dupixent (dupilumab) recently became the first biologic injectable approved to treat COPD. It aids in reducing exacerbations and can help improve lung function.

Valley is proud to offer this treatment to patients diagnosed with COPD. This injectable will need to be self-administered at home.

Please speak with your provider, who will conduct a thorough evaluation to see if biologic injections are right for you.
