BERGEN COUNTY CELEBRATES INDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY


Commemorates the 79th Anniversary of Indian Independence
HACKENSACK, NJ – On Wednesday, August 13, the County of Bergen hosted a celebration in honor of Indian Independence Day at Two Bergen County Plaza, in partnership with Arya Samaj of New Jersey, EID Committee of New Jersey, Indo-American Senior Citizens Association of Bergen County, Inc., Hindu Samaj Temple of Mahwah, Indian Americans of Paramus, ISKCON of Bergen County, Kerala Cultural Forum of New Jersey, Milan Group Paramus, Ridgewood Indian Community, Riverdell Indian Association, and St. Peter Mar Thoma Church.

Indian Independence Day is celebrated annually on August 15th, commemorating the end of British rule in 1947 and the establishment of a free and independent Indian nation.

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco, III issued a proclamation recognizing August 15, 2025, as Indian Independence Day. The proclamation and Bergen County Challenge Coin were presented to Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of India in New York, the Honorable Vishal Harsh, who also served as the keynote speaker for the event.

Welcome remarks were given by Suresh Shah, President of the Indo-American Senior Citizens Association of Bergen County.

The event featured cultural performances by the Music Sunita Academy of Indian Music and the River Dell Indian Association. Students from the Music Sunita Academy of Indian Music returned at the end of the event to perform the Indian National Anthem as the Indian flag was raised in the Piazza of One Bergen County Plaza.  

The County of Bergen presented 2025 Indian Independence Day Outstanding Service Contribution Awards to members of the community.

Refreshments for the event were provided by Arya Samaj of New Jersey, EID Committee of New Jersey, Indo-American Senior Citizens Association of Bergen County, Inc., Hindu Samaj Temple of Mahwah, Indian Americans of Paramus, ISKCON of Bergen County, Kerala Cultural Forum of New Jersey, Milan Group Paramus, Ridgewood Indian Community.
