Hackensack Riverkeeper Clean Water Celebration 2021

The environmental organization has a very bright future – thanks to their honorees

Members of the press are invited to attend Hackensack Riverkeeper’s annual Gala – Our Bright Future – tomorrow evening, October 12, 2021. The venue is the Estate at Florentine Gardens, located at 97 Rivervale Road, River Vale, NJ. Doors open at 6:30PM. Three honorees have been singled out for their leadership; particularly their support of Hackensack Riverkeeper in the aftermath of the fire that devastated the group’s offices on May 16, 2020.

“Dealing with the pandemic was bad enough for all of us, but the added injury of losing our home of nearly two decades was almost too much to handle,” recalls Captain Bill Sheehan. “Those we’re honoring tomorrow stepped up in a very big way and brought their expertise to bear on our behalf. The least we can do is publicly thank them for all they’ve done for us.”

The 2021 honorees are:

Boswell Engineering / Corporate Environmental Stewardship Award

Kevin Boswell will accept the award for his company’s engineering and structural assessments at 231 and 206 Main Street, for providing those necessary services at a reduced rate, and for their overall support of Riverkeeper’s mission.

DL Maron Architect, PC / Corporate Environmental Stewardship Award

David and Judith Maron will accept the award for their company’s architectural renderings for 231 Main Street, which allowed Riverkeeper to develop the reconstruction parameters and provided the group with the real options for the future.

Elite Management Holdings, LLC / Captain’s Circle in Perpetuity

Sam Pessar will accept this first-time award for his patience and forbearance in creating the transaction that will have his company take ownership of 231 Main while simultaneously transferring ownership of his property at 206 Main to Hackensack Riverkeeper.

Among the dignitaries who are expected to attend the event are NJ State Senator Holly Schepisi (R-39), Bergen County Executive James Tedesco (D), and other state, county and local officials. In addition, environmental leaders including Sam Pesin, President of the Friends of Liberty State Park and NY/NJ Baykeeper Greg Remaud will also be in attendance to celebrate the awardees and support Hackensack Riverkeeper’s continuing mission to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River.

The celebration will feature Special Guest Host Brian Thompson, New Jersey correspondent for NBC-4 New York.

Event sponsors include: American Dream, Atlantic Realty Xchange at Secaucus, Bergen County Utilities Authority, Boswell Engineering, Edison Properties, EZ Dock Unlimited, Hackensack Meridian Health, Haftek, Hilco Redevelopment Partners, Hugo Neu at Kearny Point, NJM Insurance Group, PSE&G, Samsung Electronics America, and SUEZ.

Founded in 1997 by Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper employs a fourfold strategy of environmental action, advocacy, education and litigation in its mission to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River.
