CarePlus NJ Offers Virtual Training on Identifying Microaggressions in the Workplace

Marks Continued Expansion of Internal DEI Efforts to Promote Social Justice in the Communities it Serves
Paramus, N.J. (February 9, 2022) – Care Plus NJ, Inc. (“CarePlus NJ”), a pioneer in integrated primary and behavioral health services for adults and children, announces it will be offering a virtual training titled “Identifying & Addressing Microaggressions in the Workplace” on February 10, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

This training marks the continued expansion of CarePlus NJ’s internal diversity, equity and inclusion trainings which are being offered to the public to better educate the communities it serves and promote social justice.

The training will be presented by CarePlus NJ’s Lorelle Holway, LCSW, Giesel Girona, MSW and Thurmond Gillis Jr., LAC, who will provide participants with an introduction to microaggressions, explore the history of the term, and identify various types of microaggressions. Participants will explore examples of everyday occurrences of microaggressions and attain a better understanding of their impact in the process. The course will also cover the difference between intent and impact and facilitate a discussion on how the impact of microaggressions, regardless of intent, can have serious psychological and workplace consequences.

The training is part of CarePlus NJ’s continued efforts to build a culture of equity, inclusion and respect with the organization’s employees and the community through its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Action (IDEA) Committee. The IDEA Committee was established in 2020 as a means to enact tangible change in response to the racial injustice and civil unrest surrounding the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others. With the goal of actively fostering an environment of cultural competency though staff and community education, the IDEA Committee seeks to promote social justice through education and advocacy.

“We’ve been offering microaggressions trainings internally at CarePlus NJ as well as through our Crisis Intervention Team trainings for law enforcement and mental health professionals, but microaggressions can and do appear in all types of work environments,” said Giesel Girona-Ussery, Associate Vice President and Co-Chair of CarePlus NJ’s IDEA Committee. “This training will provide members of our community with the support, resources and education required to properly identify and adequately address microaggressions in their own behaviors, among their employees and across their organization to foster a more inclusive workplace for everyone.”

Registration is now open for the Microaggressions training. The cost to participate is $40. Professional Counselors can earn two National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Clock Hours and NJ Social Workers can earn two continuing education (CE) credits (Clinical & Social/Cultural).
