An Emmy Nod for Bergen Adjunct

PARAMUS, N.J. – College adjunct faculty bring varied knowledge to the classroom, often connecting their teaching to experiences in their primary careers outside higher education. In turn, students have the opportunity to reflect on a subject from both the academic and practical, broadening their understanding of a topic.

Some students, including those at Bergen Community College, even have the opportunity to learn from an Emmy nominee.

Bergen philosophy and religion adjunct George Hoehmann notched a New York Emmy Award nomination in the “religion - short or long-form” category last year for his local television show “Faith Matters.” The show, which airs on the Altice cable system and YouTube, brings guests of different faiths together to discuss issues impacting local communities.

The episode of “Faith Matters” that drew the Emmy nomination featured a discussion with a rabbi, reverend and imam on anti-religious bias. Hoehmann, who serves as executive producer, host and moderator of the program, said “Faith Matters” promotes tolerance.

“Each of the religious leaders gave a face and voice to a specific religion and hopefully this promotes understanding and acceptance by the larger community of those who are of a different faith,” Hoehmann, of Nanuet, New York, said. “It was a bit humbling and with a good deal of pride that we can say our effort was good enough to be nominated in the most competitive environment ever.”

Currently in his second stint as a Bergen adjunct, Hoehmann also teaches at Montclair State University and Felician University. Bergen Philosophy and Religion Department Chair Peter Dlugos, Ph.D., said students benefit from having Hoehmann teach at the College.

“It’s a model of civic engagement: a model for how professors can bring the academic work of community colleges directly into their local communities to promote unity and harmony in our towns,” he said.

Hoehmann also works as the elected town supervisor in the Town of Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York.

Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college, enrolls more than 13,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
