Bergen Athletes Close Spring with Honors

PARAMUS, N.J. – Bergen Community College student-athletes finished the spring season strong, with members of the track and field, baseball and softball teams earning honors. Among the accolades for the Bulldogs, three members of the track and field team each finished in the top 10 of their meets at the national tournament, while three baseball and softball players made all-region teams.

“These student-athletes made a commitment to excellence upon their arrival to Bergen,” Bergen Athletic Director Jorge Hernandez said. “To the best of their ability, they have achieved that and more. We are very proud of them for earning these accolades, which have put a favorable spotlight on our athletic program.”

At the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Nationals, first-year athlete Hannah Otterstedt of Ridgewood, finished third in the discus and sixth in the shot put. Fellow first-year Bulldog Joseph Henderson, of Bloomingdale, finished fourth in the 1500-meter and fifth in the 800-meter events. Sophomore Kevin Ramirez, of Teaneck, took seventh in the 200-meter event.

Meanwhile, on the diamond, sophomore Ian Scalabrini, of Oakland, slugged seven home runs en route to all-Region XIX third team honors and sophomores Melody Peralta, of Elmwood Park, and Brandi Shortway, of Midland Park, each made the all-Region XIX second team. Peralta hit five home runs during the spring campaign, while Shortway compiled a .613 on-base percentage, which ranked sixth in the nation.
