Rite Aid Pharmacists Now Have Prescriptive Authority for Hormonal Contraceptives in New Jersey

In line with state guidelines, Rite Aid enhances access to contraceptive care 

Rite Aid announced that customers in New Jersey can now receive prescribed hormonal contraceptives directly from their local Rite Aid pharmacist following a private in-person consultation. Rite Aid pharmacists across ten states now have prescriptive authority for hormonal contraceptives including California, Idaho, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Virginia and Vermont in compliance with each state’s laws and regulations.

Training to prescribe hormonal contraceptives typically requires the completion of a state board-approved program or continuing education program. Rite Aid has created an internal Board of Pharmacy-approved ACPE Accredited CPE course to certify our pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraception in eligible states. This rigorous training outlines the procedures to successfully guide pharmacists through the prescribing consultation for hormonal contraceptives, which includes screening, counseling, dispensing, and the required documentation.

Customers ages 18 and older in eligible states can schedule a private contraceptive consultation through our online scheduler or by speaking with their pharmacist. Walk-in consultations are also welcome.

Rite Aid has expansion plans for prescribing and dispensing hormonal contraception in additional states as regulations permit.
