Wegmans Hosts Living Gluten Free Events This Weekend

Rochester, N.Y. – As the demand for gluten-free products continues to increase, the variety of available options has also grown. Wegmans invites customers to learn more about living gluten free at an in-store event this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18.

During the event, customers can sample products and learn about resources offered by Wegmans that help support a gluten-free lifestyle, including gluten free wellness keys that help customers quickly identify gluten-free items, both with and without oats, and digital tools to quickly and easily filter search results on Wegmans.com and the app for gluten-free products and those made with no gluten-containing ingredients.

“We’ve been helping customers live gluten free for over 30 years,” said Trish Kazacos, Wegmans corporate nutrition manager, who lives gluten free herself.  “In the early 1990s, customers who had celiac disease started asking for help to identify foods that they could safely eat. We have worked with our suppliers to identify gluten-free foods and now offer thousands of Wegmans Brand and national brand products that make living gluten free easy and delicious!”

Before assigning the gluten free wellness key to a product, Wegmans works with suppliers to verify the following:

The product’s ingredients are not derived from wheat, rye, barley or oats. While oats are naturally gluten-free, some individuals do not tolerate oats or are advised to avoid oats when beginning a gluten-free diet.

The supplier shall ensure the manufacturing environment, product processing, production scheduling, and Good Manufacturing Practices are in place to prevent the cross contamination of gluten into gluten-free products.

The final product must have <20 ppm gluten from unavoidable gluten present due to inadvertent cross-contact.

If there is any doubt or the supplier cannot guarantee gluten-free status, the product will not be labeled as gluten free.

Another helpful label is the made with no gluten containing ingredients, which refers to items made or packaged in our stores. Our stores have different layouts that make it difficult to implement company-wide protocols to prevent cross-contact with gluten. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that any food that is produced, sliced, packaged or served in our stores would be gluten free. Some customers tell us they understand this risk and want to know which items are made without gluten as an ingredient. We identify these items by listing “Made with No Gluten-Containing Ingredients” on specific products or department signs.

Made with no gluten containing ingredients does not mean the item is gluten-free. It means that it does not have wheat, rye or barley ingredients, but may contain gluten due to shared preparation areas (shared preparation areas include ovens, cutting boards, utensils, grills, and fryers).

We have made it easier to find these products online with our Made with No Gluten Containing Ingredients filter.
