Juniper Village at Paramus Residents Bring Broadway to Life with Fiddler on the Roof

Paramus, NJ, June 25, 2025 – Fourteen residents of Juniper Village at Paramus took center stage earlier this month in a two-night production of Fiddler on the Roof, captivating sold-out audiences and proving that passion for performance knows no age. The shows, held June 12 and 13 in the community’s black box-style theater, were presented through Juniper Communities’ Perennial Players program and the Broadway Senior? initiative.

The production featured a specially adapted version of the beloved musical, complete with large-print scripts, reader’s theater-style staging, and accessible pacing. The crowd responded with standing ovations each night, celebrating both the artistry and the resilience of the performers.

John Docke, who portrayed Tevye, brought both humor and heart to the lead role. “It’s an honor to do it,” said Docke, a longtime participant in Juniper’s theater program. Richard Stange, who played Perchik, also designed the original playbill artwork, adding a creative flourish that highlighted the residents' multifaceted talents.

Stephanie McKay, Connections Director at Juniper Village and the production’s organizer, noted how meaningful the process was for cast and crew alike. “For many residents, this was their first time engaging with Fiddler on the Roof, but through rehearsals, they formed deep connections to the story and to each other,” McKay said. “This experience demonstrated that creative expression and community can thrive at any age.”

The production marked the third Broadway Senior? performance at the Paramus community, and enthusiasm continues to grow. “I’m totally enjoying it and appreciate the opportunity to be in this cast,” said Juanita Cacaam, who played Golde. “I’ve had a lot of fun. I hope we do it again because I love being a star!” added Eileen Gerber, cast as Yenta.

Through programs like Perennial Players, Juniper Communities creates opportunities for older adults to rediscover joy, creativity, and collaboration. The success of Fiddler on the Roof is a testament to the vibrancy and spirit of its senior cast and the community that supports them.
