Upcoming May Events for Active Seniors Hosted by JCC of Northern New Jersey


The Jewish Community Center of Northern New Jersey’s Active Seniors have much to look forward to in May. Their robust programming takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at Temple Beth Sholom, 40-25 Fair Lawn Ave., Fair Lawn, NJ.

Highlights include:

Commandment 613      

Thursday, May 5/11 AM

Screening and discussion following the 23 minute film documentary, Commandment 613, directed by Miriam Lewin. The film focuses on Rabbi Kevin Hale who joyfully practices the sacred craft of Torah restoration, bringing new life to scrolls saved during the Shoah. As he works with communities entrusted with the scrolls, he reflects on his own path to faith and practice. This program is co-sponsored by the Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Congregation B’nai Israel.

Fly Me To The Moon       

Tuesday, May 17/11 AM

Bergen County Academies High School Junior, Tal Ledeniov will be presenting Fly Me To The Moon, a vocal performance which belies his age and demonstrates his passion for the “oldies”. The concert is a collection of songs from the Golden Age of music, including jazz and swing standards. This program is co-sponsored by the Pascack Valley/Northern Valley Chapter of Hadassah.

Olive You! The Benefits of Olives and Olive Oil    

Tuesday, May 24/11 AM

Retail Registered Dietician, Erika Lannaman, on staff at Inserra Supermarkets/ShopRite of Hackensack will be leading a workshop and tasting about the benefits of heart-healthy olives and olive oil. A variety of olives and olive oils from different regions will be sampled and ways to incorporate these healthy foods into your life will be discussed.

What Binds Us: Weekly Knitting & Crocheting Circle    

Tuesdays, May 3, 10, 17, 24/12:30-1:30 PM

Join this weekly group if you want to learn how to knit or crochet, pick up some new tips, or share some pearls with the group. Extra yarn will be available for participants to use at no cost. $5 knitting and crocheting needles will be available for sale. Community volunteer and noted teacher from KnitTapestry in Waldwick, Roberta Abrams, will be on-hand May 3 and 17 to teach beginners. All levels of experience welcome!

Proof of vaccinations or negative COVID test within 48 hours of the program are required to participate in all programs. Masks required for indoor activities.
