National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section Advocates for Women’s Rights with Screening of "Bella!" at the Teaneck International Film Festival

TEANECK, NJ (November 12, 2023) - The National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section (NCJW BCS), a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action, will host filmmaker Jeff L. Lieberman for a showing and discussion about his 2023 film “Bella!” at the Teaneck International Film Festival (TIFF).

The screening will take place on Sunday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Emeth, located at 1666 Windsor Rd, Teaneck NJ. Tickets to the event are on sale now for $10 at www.teaneckfilmfestival.org. Tickets will also be available at the door for $15.

“Bella!" is Jeff L. Lieberman's documentary showcasing Bella Abzug's remarkable journey from the streets of Manhattan to Congress. With her iconic hats and Brooklyn charm, she championed credit cards for women, LGBTQ equality, and diverse leadership during her time in Congress. The film unveils rare home videos, audio diaries, and newly-found news footage, shedding light on a trailblazing era where Abzug sacrificed her political ambitions for future female leaders.

This year at the screening, National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section will be presented with the WOW (Women of Wisdom) Award in recognition of NCJW BCS’s century of involvement, community service, advocacy, and activism. NCJW BCS strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

After the film, former NJ State Senator Loretta Weinberg, Teaneck’s own feisty activist and honorary NCJW BCS member, and Lieberman will participate in a talkback moderated by TIFF co-founder and WOW founder Judy Distler. The talkback will feature discussions around the themes of the film which are still relevant today as women fight for reproductive freedom, equal pay, equal access to education and more.

In its 18th year, the film festival's enduring theme of "Activism: Making Change" resonates clearly. With options for both in-person and virtual screenings, attendees can experience the essence of TIFF, where unspoken issues are brought to the forefront, fostering a greater appreciation for diversity and promoting love and understanding for all.
