Medical Volunteers Perform Life Changing Surgeries

In the Dominican Republic With Healing the Children New Jersey
February 2, 2025 (Hawthorne, New Jersey) – Healing the Children New Jersey (HTCNJ), a New Jersey based nonprofit, sent a team of 17 medical volunteers to Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic February 1st for a week-long pediatric orthopedic surgical mission. Led by Dr. Edward Nieuwenhuis, Jr., Dr. Avrum Joffe, Dr. Anthony Delfico, and Trip Administrator Ellen Walsh, the
team is expecting to perform over 40 corrective surgeries on young children born with congenital anomalies.
Serving as a mobile hospital, the team travels with their own medical equipment and donated supplies. Through a partnership with Clinica Corazones Unidos, in Santo Domingo, DR, the team will screen and perform surgeries on young children, many of whom have been waiting years for these life changing procedures.
The trip is sponsored by Healing the Children New Jersey, a nonprofit that provides free medical care and services to children in New Jersey and developing countries. The medical team is made up of volunteers, many of whom travel at least once a year on medical mission trips with HTCNJ. The trip is not only life changing for the young patients, but life changing for the
volunteers as well. Trip Administrator, Ellen Walsh, is participating on her fourth mission trip with Healing the Children New Jersey. “One surgery can change the whole life of a child. It
brings me great joy to be able to help these adorable children and provide them with access to care and life-altering help that is not available in their country”.
