KBD Group Begins Renovation of Future Headquarters of Seafarers International House in Lower Manhattan
Historic nonprofit invests in new permanent headquarters to expand services for mariners, immigrants and asylum seekers
New York, New York - August 11, 2026 — KBD Group has commenced construction as general contractor for the renovation of 18 Vesey Street in Lower Manhattan, the future permanent home of Seafarers International House (SIH), a nonprofit organization that has served merchant mariners, immigrants and international travelers for more than 150 years. Seafarers International House purchased the building as part of its strategic plan to better serve the evolving needs of the maritime and immigrant community.
“For more than a century and a half, our organization has welcomed and supported people from around the world. This project represents the fruition of years of planning to create a headquarters worthy of an organization that has served seafarers and immigrants, while preparing us for the next century of service,” said Reverend Marsh Luther Drege, Executive Director and Pastor of the Seafarers International House. The organization is currently operating from a temporary headquarters during construction.
Located just steps from City Hall Park and the World Trade Center, the 9,100-square-foot, five-story property will undergo a comprehensive interior renovation designed to create modern mission-based guestrooms, administrative offices and hospitality spaces that support the organization’s programs and operations.
KBD Group is serving as general contractor for the approximately $2.8 million renovation, overseeing all phases of construction in collaboration with architect Arcari & Iovino and engineering consultant All City Engineering.
“We’re honored to partner with Seafarers International House on a project that represents far more than a building renovation,” said Craig Bagnoli, Regional Group Leader, New York/New Jersey, KBD Group. “This investment will provide a modern, efficient home that allows Seafarers International House to expand their mission for generations to come, and we’re proud to help bring that vision to life.”
The project includes the complete interior renovation of the five-story brownstone-style building, with work extending from the sub-cellar through the roof. Major improvements include new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, split-system heat pumps, air conditioning upgrades and installation of a new 80-kilowatt rooftop emergency generator. The renovation modernizes the building’s infrastructure while preserving its existing footprint, allowing the facility to better support Seafarers International House’s mission for the future.
