Residential Burglary - Arrest


The Paramus Police Department announces the arrest of Nicolas Lozano Cortes, 25 yoa of Flushing, NY, Julian Santiago Cortes-Camelo, 22 yoa of West New York, NJ, Johan Felipe Medina, 22 yoa of Flushing, NY and Santiago Ortiz 22 yoa of Flushing, NY for burglary, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension and conspiracy to commit theft.

On Friday, December 23, 2022 at approximately 11:35 am the Paramus Police Department received a call of a residential burglary in progress on Haywood Drive. The caller reported that she observed 2 males wearing hoods, dressed in all black enter the rear of her neighbor’s house. She also reported a third male was in a silver Toyota Camry parked in the street across from the residence.

Officer Kevin Osback and Dan DiRienzo arrived on the scene and located the get a way vehicle. Osback approached the driver, Nicolas Lozano Cortes. The driver was shouting “Policia” into his cell phone. While investigating the driver they observed a second vehicle, a dark colored Toyota Camry which was attempting to flee the scene from the area. Officer Dan DiRienzo with the assistance of Officer Kurtis Massey stopped the fleeing vehicle and detained Julian Santiago Cortes-Camelo.

Officers checked the residence and discovered entry had been made by force to the rear door and a burglary was believed to have been committed. The residence was cleared and officers began checking the surrounding area. Sergeant Dean Avagnano located and arrested Johan Medina running in the area of Buttonwood drive. After a short foot pursuit Detective Matt McGuire and Detective Lieutenant Tom Schroeder located Julian Santiago Cortes-Camelo attempting to hide under a backyard deck on Beechwood Drive.

It was determined that all subjects were involved in the burglary. They were arrested and transported to Paramus Police Headquarters where they were processed. All were remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a bail hearing. The defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Paramus Police department had the assistance of Officers from the Rochelle Park Police Department, Maywood Police Department, Sheriffs from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department and Troopers from the New Jersey State Police.

Julian Santiago Cortes-Camelo & Nicolas Lozano Cortes were charged with:

Conspiracy to commit burglary   2C: 5-2

Burglary                                           2C: 18-2

Hindering Prosecution                   2C:29-3

Johan Medina & Santiago Ortiz were charged with:

Burglary                                           2C: 18-2

Eluding police on foot                    2C:29-2A

Resisting arrest                                 2C:29-2

The investigation is still active and detectives believe the similarities in thieves and their methods are related to other thefts throughout the county.

Paramus Detectives continue to investigate these crimes in partnership with numerous other municipal and federal law enforcement agencies.
