RIDGEWOOD – West Side Presbyterian Church takes seriously the call to care for creation and invest in our planet, offering a number of events for members of the community during Earth Day Weekend.
Saturday, April 23, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm – Family Walk/Hike at the James A McFaul Environmental Center in Wyckoff. All ages are invited - from toddlers to seniors. (Strollers and walkers can be accommodated at this ADA-compliant wildlife sanctuary.) There are nature trails to explore, a “trex” path around the lake, animals to visit, a gazebo on the pond and a paved road for more serious walkers. For the kids: an “eye spy” scavenger hunt and a simple craft related to Earth Day. Bring a bagged lunch and water - and a curiosity for the budding landscape - and meet us at the covered pavilion near the pond. Guides from West Side will be on hand to help navigate the event.
Sunday, April 24 – A special Earth Day Healing and Wholeness Service during the 8:15 am, 9:00 am and 11:00 am worship services.
Sunday, April 24 at 10:00 am – The dedication of our new Community Garden created by Eagle Scout Jack McWilliams from Troop 54 in Ho-Ho-Kus. Vegetables grown in the garden will be donated to local food pantries this summer.
Sunday, April 24 – The launch of a new initiative to recycle plastic bags and plastic “film,” which are typically not accepted in curbside recycling programs. Members of the community may now bring their clean and dry grocery bags, produce bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, bubble wrap, product wraps, shipping envelopes, stretch film and resealable food storage bags to West Side. (Tip: If the plastic stretches, it can be recycled. If it tears like paper, is shiny or makes a crinkly sound in your hand, it can’t be recycled.) Donation bins are located in the vestibule on the Hillside Avenue entrance of the church, to the left of the main entrance. West Side’s goal is to collect 500 pounds of plastic film by October 31 in partnership with NexTrex, which is the largest plastic film recycler in the United States.
